Unleash Peak Efficiency with Premium Water Coolers for Your PC

A well-functioning, balanced water cooling system is considered by many to be the pinnacle of PC building. However, this area is a world of its own, which one should only venture into with a substantial amount of acquired knowledge, a willingness to test and learn, and a bit of saved budget. Those who approach it half-heartedly may not achieve the expected results in terms of cooling performance and noise, or in the worst case, may even damage their hardware due to insufficient cooling or water leakage in the case. To avoid such a disaster, careful consideration is required, which can include a checklist of the necessary water cooling components.

The ABCs of Every Water Cooling System

Every water cooling system is unique and must be tailored to the hardware components to be cooled (motherboard, processor, graphics card, memory, etc.), considering the case's conditions and the desired intentions (maximum quietness vs. maximum cooling). However, the following water cooling components are almost always part of a liquid cooling system in some form:

    • Pump: It is the heart of the system and must be chosen regarding performance, noise, and durability.
    • Cooler: They ensure that the CPU, GPU, and co. can transfer their heat to the water cooling system. Compatibility with motherboard sockets, graphics card types, etc., as well as personal taste and coherence with other water cooling parts, must also be considered.
    • Tubes and fittings: Different sizes (inner and outer diameters) are available, and optimal tubing cannot be recommended universally. It is also important that the fittings (compression fittings) match the tubing and other components.
    • Reservoir: It holds a surplus of water, as the coolant level in the system decreases over time. The reservoir can usually be filled directly.
    • Radiator: Depending on the desired cooling performance and the available space in the case, the heat exchanger should be chosen. Depending on the number of fans to be used, there are single, dual, triple, and quad radiators, often for 120 mm or 140 mm fans, and sometimes also in an ultra-thin low-profile format.
    • Fans: Fans should be selected to match the radiator and the heat sources to be cooled. They must have enough static pressure and sufficient airflow. PWM technology can be used, where the motherboard itself controls the necessary speeds.
    • Pump/fan controller: For those who prefer to regulate the performance themselves or do not trust the motherboard's pulse-width modulation, fan controllers are available. In the water cooling area, these are regularly combined with pump controllers, which can regulate the flow rates of compatible pumps.
    • Coolant: Opinions on coolant differ. Some prefer it to be particularly colourful and perhaps even phosphorescent, while others can only recommend clear coolants to avoid the risk of sediment build-up. However, one thing is clear: it does not work without coolant.
